穏やかな気候で雨も多いロンドンでは、エアコンはあまり普及していない。しかし今週25日、ロンドンでは7月の過去最高気温38.1度を観測。イギリスではこの一週間、全国的に高温に見舞われ、ロンドンでは通勤客がエアコンの効いた場所に逃げ込んでいる。
ロンドン交通局（TFL）は利用客に水を持ち歩き、地下鉄車内にはあおぐ扇子などを持参するよう呼び掛けている。エアコンが装備されていない地下鉄では、高温が危険なレベルに達する可能性があるためだ。乗換案内アプリ「Citymapper（シティマッパー）」は、新たにエアコンの効いた地下鉄で移動できるルートを紹介する機能を開始した（ロンドン地下鉄でエアコンが装備されている路線は約40％）。市民はこの機能をありがたがっている。

ツイッターユーザーの@geofftechは今週、エアコンの効いた地下鉄だけの路線図を作成し、ツイッターで共有した。「ロンドンは今日が33度、明日が34度、そして木曜（25日）が37度だって‼ 去年作ったエアコン地下鉄路線図を共有するので、リツイートしてくれ」

ロンドンで最も混雑するセントラルラインは、路線が古く、工法が適合しないためエアコンが装備されていない。イギリス鉄道網のほとんどを管理するネットワーク・レールのニック・キングは、BBCラジオの朝の番組「トゥデイ」に出演し、同社が38度以上の気温で運行する想定にはなっていないと話した。
鉄道はいずれも、高温でレールが歪む恐れがあることから各所で減速運転をしており、遅延などが発生している。ロンドン中心部から南東郊外へ向かうサウスイースタン鉄道は、利用客に対して「どうしても必要な」場合以外は乗車を避けるよう求めている。その他の鉄道会社ではまったく利用しないように呼び掛けているところもある。

イギリス気象庁は、「気候変動によって、ヨーロッパ全域が熱波に見舞われる可能性が高まり、そのレベルも悪化している」という見解を示している。
