『アンダー・ハー・マウス』 エリカ・リンダー インタビュー / Interview with Erika Linder

そのジェンダーレスな表情がファッションシーンで大きな話題となっているトップモデルのエリカ・リンダーが、『アンダー・ハー・マウス』でスクリーンデビューを果たした。彼女が演じるのは、夫のいるキャリアウーマンのジャスミンと恋に落ちる、レズビアンの女性ダラス。映画初挑戦にして難しい役どころだが、実に魅力的で自然な演技を披露している。ここではエリカ自身が、体当たりで挑んだデビュー作の撮影秘話を語ってくれた。



——これまでモデルとして活躍されてきましたが、以前から俳優業には興味があったのでしょうか？


エリカ「いいえ、そうでもありませんでした。私はこの業界で育ったわけではないので、たまたまそうなった感じです。モデル業がきっかけで楽しいクリエイティヴな世界に入ることになり、演技の話はその後に来ました。これも同じように、流れでそうなったので、本当にラッキーでした。大変な仕事ではありますが、俳優業は大好きです」


——本作は初出演作品として、ご自身のキャリアの上でも大切な作品かと思います。この作品で演技に挑戦しようと決意した最大の理由は何でしたか？


エリカ「初めに脚本を読んだとき、この作品は本物のラブストーリーだと思いましたし、全員女性のスタッフで作られるということも素晴らしいと思いました。この業界は全体的に男性優位なので、そうでなくてもいいということを証明できるのは重要なことです。私はこの映画が発信するメッセージがすごく気に入りました。特別だと感じましたし、実際そうですよね。それに、自分のキャリアをもう一段階上のレベルへ持っていきたいと思っていたので、完璧な作品だと感じました。デビューするにあたって、これ以上素晴らしい役はないと思います」

——劇中のダラスは、エリカさん以外では考えられないほどぴったりと合うキャラクターだと感じました。ご自身がダラスに共感した部分はありますか？また、逆に理解に苦しむ一面などはありましたか？


エリカ「私とダラスはいろんな意味でとても違うのですが、彼女を理解することはできます。それが役を忠実に演じる上で重要なことだと思います。連続殺人犯を演じようがスーパーヒーローを演じようが、関係ありません。必ずしもその役柄に共感できなくても、なぜその人物がその行動を取るのか、なぜそれが必要なのかということを理解することが必要なんです。ダラスはタフなイメージを保とうとし、気持ちや感情を見せたくないタイプです。周りの人たちを丁寧に扱わないのですが、それも、ジャスミンに出逢うまでは、という話です。理解することこそが、重要なのだと思います」


——初めてとは思えないほど堂々とした自然な演技に魅了されました。撮影に向けてどのような準備をされましたか？また、スクリーンに映った自分を観てどう思われましたか？


エリカ「この役が決まったとき、私は故郷のスウェーデンへ帰りました。あのときは、LAやこの業界に身を置いておきたくなかったのです。役柄と脚本に集中するためには自分の時間が必要でした。その後、ナタリーと私、そしてプロデューサー陣と監督、脚本家がそろって、読み合わせをしたり、互いに絆を深めたりするために、1週間ほどコテージで一緒に過ごしました。さらに私はダラスのように屋根の修理工になりきるために、本当の修理現場で働きもしました。作品における信ぴょう性は重要ですから。あの経験はすごく楽しかったです」


——複数のセックスシーンなどもあり、難しい役どころだったのではないかと思います。現場で最も苦労した点は何ですか？


エリカ「そうですね。ラブシーンの撮影は、ナタリー、私、監督、撮影監督、音声スタッフだけという閉鎖されたセットで行われました。すべては私たちが快適で安心できる環境を整えるためでした。もちろん、本作における経験自体が私的なものとなりましたが、その瞬間は周りが見えなくなり、ただそれに向かって突き進むだけでした。私たちは自分たちが引き受けた仕事を司会していましたし、一緒に敬意を持って臨みました。この撮影で経験したすべてのことが大変でしたが、さっきも言った通り、盲目に突き進むのみという感じでした。撮影は時系列に行われたので、私たちも役柄と同じように関係を深めていきました。恐らく多くの人が俳優は簡単な仕事だと思っているでしょうけど、深く掘り下げなければならないですし、別の人間の気持ちや感情を感じなくてはならないため、とても大変な仕事です。しかも、それを観客に信じてもらうためにはリアルでなければならないのですが、私たちはみんなでそれをやってのけたと思います」


——本作ではすべてのクルーが女性だったそうですが、現場の雰囲気はいかがでしたか？女性クルーだったことに助けられたことはありますか？


エリカ「私は、女性はとても感情的なレベルでお互いに分かり合えると思っています。それは撮影現場でも確実に感じることができました。この映画はみんなにとって大切なラブストーリーとなったのですが、それは観ていただければ感じられると思います。とてもロマンチックな作品なのです。この映画に関わったみんなのことを誇りに思います。私たちは一緒に美しいものを作り上げたのです」


——日本では欧米に比べて、LGBTQコミュニティーへの理解がまだ低い部分が大きいです。LGBTQコミュニティーの人たちのみならず、日本の幅広い観客に対して、本作からどのようなことを感じ取ってほしいですか？


エリカ「境界線を曖昧にするということですね。誰もが常に人や関係性にラベルを貼って生きていますが、それから解放されなければならないと思います。どんな道を選ぼうと、誰もが各々の人生を自分の選んだように生きるべきです。愛は愛ですし、それによって悩むべきではありません。嘘を生きるより、自分らしく生きる方がいいですよね。自分自身と自分の気持ちに正直になってください。どんなときでも」

——ご自身がLGBTQコミュニティーのロールモデルのような存在となっていることについて、どう思われますか？


エリカ「一度も自分がロールモデルだと思ったことはないので、不思議な感じです。でも、私は自分に正直に、自分らしくありながら、ベストを尽くそうと努力してきました。ですので、もしそう言われているのであればうれしいです。それによってフォロワーが生まれるのは素晴らしいことですし、うれしく思います。私は自分らしく生きている人は誰でも尊敬しています」


——今後はどのような役を演じたいですか？俳優として尊敬している人はいますか？


エリカ「どんな脚本や役柄でも、何か自分に訴えてくるものがあれば興味があります。私は新しいことにとても前向きですが、納得できるものだけをやるようにしています。信頼できるものでなければ絶対にやらないので、今後のことはわかりません。次に演じたい役のアイデアやビジョンはあって、すでに取り組んでいるプロジェクトもいくつかあります。『アンダー・ハー・マウス』の撮影以来、とても多くのことを学んでいるので、大変楽しみにしています。尊敬する女優さんはティルダ・スウィントンです。彼女は天才で、影響力がすごいですね」


——モデル業、俳優業以外に挑戦したいことはありますか？


エリカ「さまざまなことに情熱を持ってはいるのですが、それを公言したいかどうかわかりません。どんな形であれ、アートを作ることは大好きですし、音楽もそうです。私にとって、一番熱中していることなんです。私は小さい頃からずっとミュージシャンになりたいと思っていました。基本的に、毎日ギターを弾いたり曲を書いたりしています。多分いつの日か、別名でリリースすると思います」

-You have been active as a model so far, have you been interested in actor business before?


No, not really. I didn't grow up in the industry, I just sort of fell into it. Modelling helped me to enter a fun and creative world, and acting came after that. Same thing, I fell into it and got really lucky. It's hard work but I love it.


-I think that this work is important on your career as the first appearance work. What was the biggest reason why you decided to challenge acting in this film ”Below her Mouth”?


When I first read the script I felt that it was such an authentic love story and I also loved the fact that it was made by an all female crew. The industry is male dominant overall so it is important to be able to show that it doesn't have to be. I loved the message the movie spreads. It felt special and it was. I also wanted to take my career to another level and it felt like the perfect fit. I couldn't have asked for a better first role.


-I cannot think of anybody but you for the role of Dallas because I think you are the perfect fit. Do you have a part that you sympathized with Dallas? On the other hand, did you have a side of her which you could not understand?


The thing with Dallas and myself is that we are very different in a lot of ways, but I understand her. That's the main thing about playing a character authentically. It doesn't matter if you're playing a serial killer or a superhero. You have to have some sort of an understanding to why they do what they do and their needs, even if you don't necessarily agree with them. Dallas is trying to keep up this tough facade and doesn't want to let her feelings and emotions show. She doesn't treat her surrounding that good, until she meets Jasmine. It's all about finding an understanding.


-I was fascinated with your imposing and natural acting even though this was your acting debut. How did you prepare for the shooting? How did you feel about watching yourself on the screen?


When I got the role I went back home to Sweden. I didn't want to be in LA and be surrounded by the industry at the time. I needed space and to focus on the character and the script. Natalie, myself, the producers, director and the screenwriter all spent a week together at a cottage to do table read and to connect and bond with each other. I also worked on an actual roofing site to learn how to master being a roofer. It's important to be authentic in your work. I had so much fun doing that.







-I think this must’ve been a hard job for you because there were several sex scenes. What was the most difficult thing in the shooting?


For sure. It was a closed set which means that during the love scenes it was only Natalie and myself, plus the director, DP and sound. All to make us feel comfortable and safe in our surrounding. Of course the whole experience becomes personal but you zone out in those moments and just go for it. We knew what we signed up for and we went it for it together with respect. The whole experience was challenging but like I said, you zone out and just go for it. We shot all the scenes chronically so we grew with the characters. I think most people think acting is such an easy job, but the fact that you have to dig deep and feel another persons feelings and emotions is a hard task. It has to be authentic for others to believe it, and I think we all made that happen.


-In this work, all crews were female. How was the atmosphere of filming?


I think women understands each other on a very emotional level. You could definitely feel it on set. It became everyone's love story and I believe you can see and sense it from watching the film. It has got a very romantic tone to it. I'm proud of everyone involved. We all made something beautiful together.


-Comparing to the Western countries, the understanding level toward the LGBTQ community is still low in Japan. What kind of things do you want not only the LGBTQ people but a wider audience in Japan to feel from this film?


I think to just blur the lines. Everyone always needs to put a label on people and relationships. It should just be free. I believe that everyone should live their lives whichever way they choose to live it. Love is love and it shouldn't bother anyone. It's better to live your life authentically than to live a lie. Be true to yourself and your feelings. Always.


-How do you think about yourself being like a role model of the LGBTQ community?


It's strange because I never really saw myself as a role model. But it's good to know that I've made it so far by just being honest and by being myself and to still strive to be the best I can be. To have a following from that is amazing and flattering. I look up to anyone who is being authentic.


-What kind of role do you want to play in the future? Do you have a respecting actor?


Whatever script or character that speaks to me, I'm interested in. I'm very open to new things but I'm only doing it if it feels right. I would never do anything that I don't believe in. So we will see. I do have an idea and a vision of what I want to play next and I have a few things up my sleeve that I'm working on at the moment. I've learned so much since shooting Below Her Mouth so it's all very exciting. When it comes to an actress that I respect I would have to say Tulsa Swinton. I think she's a genius and such a force.


-Do you have anything you want to try other than modeling and acting?


I mean, there's a ton of stuff that I'm passionate about but don't know if I would want to go public about it. I love creating art in any form and I love music. It's my first passion. I've always wanted to be a musician ever since I was a little kid. I play guitar and write music everyday, basically. I'll probably release it someday under another name than my own.
