Top 10 talent trends for Japan in 2014

Top 10 talent trends for Japan in 2014

Bicultural ability, Unified Communications technologies skills and a shortage of local engineering talent are among the 2014 talent trends that will shape the recruitment landscape in Japan, according to recruiting experts Hays.

“Japan's economy grew 1.9 per cent in the July-September quarter and rising consumer prices indicate growth is gaining momentum, which should feed through into the labour market in the first few months of 2014,” said Jonathan Sampson, Regional Director of Hays in Japan.

“In 2014 we will also continue to see strong demand for bilingual candidates across many sectors. In an increasingly competitive global market employers are looking for candidates with a global mind-set whom can communicate and negotiate with an overseas head office and take the local Japanese operation to the next level.

“Another trend will be the steady increase in the number of vacancies, yet the shortage of appropriately skilled local talent will continue, especially for engineering and financial planning & analysis candidates. As a result, we expect to see employers become even more accepting of candidates from other Asian countries.”

Hays’ top 10 talent trends for 2014:

1. Bicultural candidates sought: It is no longer enough to be bilingual. In 2014 employers will look for bicultural candidates who can communicate and negotiate with an overseas head office and take the local Japanese operation to the next level in an increasingly competitive global market.

2. Shortage of local Japanese talent: The shortage of local talent will remain a key feature of 2014’s recruitment market, especially for engineering and financial planning & analysis candidates as well as any position that requires technical skills. As a result, we expect to see employers become even more accepting of candidates from other Asian countries. We also expect to see demand rise for bilingual recruiters as companies employ a range of candidate attraction methods to source the top talent.

3. Unified Communication related technologies skills: The need for more efficient enterprise business communication from all industries will create high demand for Unified Communication related technologies and initiatives in 2014. As a result candidates with strong Cisco IP Telephony and Microsoft Lync Server skills will be in high demand. With the increase in the number of goods and services purchased online, companies want user friendly websites. Candidates with strong UI/UX technologies skills, user interface design capabilities, implementation experience and the necessary creativity will consequently be needed.

4. Senior candidates overlooked: Japan’s office professionals market is one example of how the candidate pool is becoming more senior. While these quality candidates offer employers strong experience, employers often favour junior candidates who are cheaper, which will create challenges for some jobseekers looking for their next role in 2014.

5. Global sales environment: Reflecting the globalization of Japan’s largest organisations, demand will be high for sales specialists who can effectively work in English.

6. Olympics fever: In September Tokyo was chosen as the destination for the 2020 Olympics. This is expected to boost construction and infrastructure once contracts have been awarded, and prove beneficial for the country's tourism and travel industries. Demand for materials and machinery is also expected to rise. This bodes well for jobs in construction, trades & labour and manufacturing in 2014.

7. Manufacturing pay rises: Osaka’s manufacturing industry will continue to flourish in response to the weak yen and the progression of “Abenomics”. Demand will be high for production, supply chain, accountancy & finance and sales professionals. Since the export market is backed by economic policy from the current Government, we may see general pay rises in the manufacturing industry in 2014 as employers act to retain skilled employees and hire more bilingual employees in their local headquarters.

8. Real estate improvement: Japan’s real estate market is picking up across all areas. In 2014 companies will need bilingual staff-level candidates in asset management, acquisition, property management and valuations as international organisations diversify their regional portfolios by investing in Japan’s stable market.

9. Medical affairs specialisation: Research and development is very busy and medical affairs will become even more sub-specialized in 2014. As a result employers will look for candidates with a medical Doctor background but we will also see more PhD candidates with a special focus in unique therapeutic areas such as infectious disease, CNS, oncology and vaccine in demand from multiple employers.

10. Compliance skills: We will continue to see strong demand for compliance professionals, especially in AML central compliance and trade surveillance. There will be consistent demand to hire, replace and upgrade operations candidates across functions.
