The Coney Island Mermaid Parade – A Festival Invented by Artists

Sequined bikinis, pink hair, fish scale skirts and pasties. Since 1983, over 3000 people celebrate the start of the summer season every year at the Mermaid Parade, held in Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. At this year’s 36th Annual Mermaid Parade, we saw the lively community of Brooklyn celebrating summer, ancient mythology, and the arts. Participants wearing colorful, handmade mermaid costumes exuded free, flamboyant spirits that outshone their costumes.
The Mermaid Parade was conceptualized by Dick Zigun, and pays homage to the former ‘Coney Island Mardi Gras’. Mardi Gras in the United States is mainly celebrated in Southern Louisiana, including the city of New Orleans. Mardi Gras, which translates to “Fat Tuesday” in French, refers to Shrove Tuesday, a holiday observed by many Christians. Mardi Gras celebrations are held all over the country; New Orleans hosting one of the biggest. During the celebrations, a ‘King Cake’ consisting of colors that represent Mardi Gras – yellow, green and purple – is eaten. Not only is the food colorful, but so are the clothes and costumes participants dance in. Today, the Mermaid Parade has evolved into a festival celebrating the opening of the ocean for the summer swimming season.
The parade is well-known for its remarkable costumes and occasional nudity, yet it can also be considered a place for women, men and sexual minority individuals to showcase their individualities. No matter their age, gender or lifestyle, all people who visited the Mermaid Parade celebrated marine life in their own way. Perhaps due to the release of Shape of Water (2017), there were many costumes this year that resembled creatures and aliens. Among the participants were people enjoying the parade, dressed up in costumes completely unrelated to the ocean. Not only does the Mermaid Parade achieve its goal of “bring[ing] mythology to life for local residents who live on streets named Mermaid and Neptune”, it also communicates the importance of enjoying fashion freely. No one will criticize you for how much skin you show, or for how extraordinary your costume is. The Mermaid Parade has such a spirit that respects character. Although Coney Island is often dismissed as a “tourist’s area”, the strong sense of the Brooklyn community creates an ingenious culture.
New York City hosts many other annual festivals such as the New York City LGBT Pride March, and the West Indian-American Day celebrations. Unlike most parades, the Mermaid Parade has no religious or commercial aims. Since it is a New York holiday invented by artists, this vivacious event exhibits the modern New Yorker’s philosophy that “all people should be able to dress freely”.
