14 Issue : Barragan”

「New York New Work(NYNW/2019年3月にルミネゼロで開催されたNYのデザイナーたちによるアートエキシビション)」のため来日を果たしたBarraganが登場。
--Can you tell us a little bit about your concept for this exhibition?
Barragán : We took on the concept of our heritage from Mexico. We tried to recreate the culture of Mexico and the pyramids, Teotihuacan, it’s part of Mexico City where I’m from. That was the main inspiration for building a relaxation/meditation room. We used different prints to recreate stairs going up where, after you got to the top, you could breathe the fresh air of the city. The main inspiration for our logo is the Aztec element.
--Are your projects often based on your heritage or roots? For example, are there instances when you combine your roots with other elements to create projects?
Barragán : We always use elements from Mexico City. We try to create graphic designs of the streets, incorporate street art from the city, and use colors and designs that are reminiscent of Mexico City. I’ve lived in the U.S. too when I moved 4 years ago, so I try to incorporate a mix.
--This may relate to our talk about Mexico, but are there any prominent memories from when you were 14 years old?
Barragán : Yeah, I always liked tagging Also when I was in Mexico, I had to wear uniforms so I would wear my own sneakers, try to draw on them and express myself.
--What were your interests at the time? Did you think you would become a fashion designer?
Barragán : I got into fashion when I started industrial design. I started by creating things that have practical use to them, like creating silverware with volcanic rock.
--Was there something in particular that you worked hard at since you decided you wanted to be an industrial designer, or since you were 14?
Barragán :I always have like furniture, but now I really enjoy doing fashion. Now that I’m fully in fashion, I’m starting to do home decor. So when I take all these elements from Mexico, the brand gets stronger. I think a huge brand point can be in your house, and in your decor too - in your kitchen, in your living room, etc. I love to play with both industrial design and fashion design.
―It seems that you aware of your Mexican culture and resources from when you lived there. A lot of the time, people begin to realize their heritage after moving away to the states.
Barragán :When I moved out of Mexico, it was a huge culture shock. Even the first time I went out in Mexico was memorable. When I moved to New York, I valued my culture more. I had to really feel myself leaving the country and living outside.
--After seeing your work last year and of course this year, I think you are very talented at taking something vague and transforming it into something useful like furniture or fashion. What is the process like when you are taking something abstract and turning it into something more specific?
Barragán : I always love to stay organized, make perfect squares and make three models. Visually, I like when everything is symmetrical. I feel very chill when things are in threes or they’re in symmetry haha.
--Where does that concept of threes come from?
Barragán : That was something I always learned when studying industrial design. The houses were always made with 1, 3, or 5. Visually when you look at one thing, eventually you start perceiving it in threes. I studied industrial design, so I always apply that to fashion. So it’s always the same look 3 times.
--You mentioned future plans for home decor earlier, but do you have any upcoming plans for that?
Barragán : Yeah, we actually did a couch 2 shows ago and now we have come out with a face towel.
