Craft Curiosity Issue :「アートを家庭に役立つものにすることでたくさんの人たちが見てくれる」 LIV & DOM

フィジカルな距離を求められる今、オンラインに没入する時間が増加傾向にある。情報収集や人との繋がりはもちろん大切だが、同時に自身を落ち着いたオフラインの環境に置くこともまた重要だ。自分が求めるものや喜びを感じるものを、己の手を動かして創り上げる時間は、長期戦が見込まれるこのニューノーマルを生き抜くための術でもある。NeoLではハンドメイドのアートで人々を魅了する作家の作品を紹介するとともに、ものづくりの時間へ誘う。
イギリス・ルイスに拠点を構える双子のアーティストによるブランド「LIV & DOM」。女性をモチーフにした花瓶や器などの陶芸品はストアに出るやいなやすぐにソールドアウトしてしまうほど、多くの人びとを熱中させている。独特の微笑みを誘うような味わい、モダンさと恒久的な美しさを備えた作品を生み出し続けるLIV&DOMに登場ねがった。

ーー創作を始めたきっかけを教えてください。

　
LIV & DOM : 私たちは創造することを愛していて、それで収入を生み出せるようにしたかったんです。家のためのオブジェクトを創ることで、私たちの作品をたくさんの人たちが見てくれて、購入してくれるようになるというのははっきりわかっていたのでそうしました。本当にシンプルにそこにたどり着きました。

ーーどうして陶器や土といった素材を選んだんですか。

LIV & DOM : 私たちの作品のほとんどは、彫刻にすぎないものを家庭に役立つものにすることでできています。これを実現するには、セラミックが最も簡単な方法だから。

ーーアイデアから陶器の作品として完成するまでのクリエイティティヴの過程を教えてください。

LIV & DOM : ただ座って、新しい作品の可能性について話し合うことからアイデアが生まれることが多いです。次は、アイデアをもっと引き出すか、直接土で作ってみます。ドムは特にすぐに粘土に触って作業するのが好きですね。私（リブ）はもっと緻密なスケッチブックを持っています。いくつかの釉薬と粘土を試し、いくつかの試作を経てお気に入りのものを選び、写真を撮り、宣伝し、販売するという流れです。

粘土で形を作り、乾くまで置いて、濡れたスポンジを使って滑らかな部分を作り、細かい「下絵」を加え、最初の「素焼き」が焼成、釉薬を用いて、釉薬の焼きをやる、私たちの陶器を作るプロセスはこんな感じです。

ーー制作のプロセスで一番難しい箇所は？

LIV & DOM : 時々難しいと感じるのは、アイデアを紙に書き、それぞれの頭の中にあるものを明確にお互いに示すところです。一緒に作品を作るということは、作る製品についてちゃんと合意を持っておくということだから、時々は二人が望むほどには調和が難しい場合があります。

ーー基礎知識／技術はどのようにして習得されましたか。

LIV & DOM : 陶芸スタジオでレッスンを受けました（ドムは12レッスン、私は6レッスン）。基本を理解し、週に1回、Chris BrambleとFreya Bramble-Cartersの素晴らしいスタジオにも通いました。彼らは私たちの作品を解き放ってくれて、多くのアドバイスと技術的なサポートも与えてくれたんです。それはまた、多くのことを自分で考え出し、試行錯誤することでもありました。

ーーイラストレーションを専攻していたところから3Dのアートへ移行したきっかけは？

LIV & DOM : 大学では多くの立体作品を作っていたんです。私たちが専攻したイラストのコースは、2D、本、エディトリアルというものだけを扱うわけじゃなく、とても開かれたところだったんです。最終年度には独自のプロジェクトを作ることができたので、アートオブジェクトを作って機能させる「LIV & DOM」をスタートすることを決めて、今に至ります。

ーー最初に作った作品はどのようなものでしたか。また今振り返って自身にどのようなアドバイスをしたいですか。

LIV & DOM : ブランド「LIV & DOM」の最初の作品はお香立てで、女性ではなく、男性を象った小さなもの。21歳のときの私たちへのアドバイスは「自分たちの作品を過小評価しないこと」でしょうね！

ーー作品の中にご自身の“核／個性”をどのような形で表現されていますか。

LIV & DOM : 私たちの作品をは人をリラックスさせるのではないでしょうか。私たちはゆったりとした性格で、人生をあまりシリアスに捉えぎない。それが作品の表現や伝え方に出ているといいなと願っています。過度に複雑に、過度に感情的にさせたりする作品にはしていません。みんなが私たちの作品が何と言っているかについて、それぞれに考えや見方を持っているのが好きです。

ーーその“核／個性”を作り上げたプロセスを教えてください。

LIV & DOM : 私たち２人だけでもかなりゆったりとした育ち方をしているんですが、すごくクールで穏やかなママが私たちの中にこうしたものを築いてくれたんだと思います。挫折をあまり心に留めない。２人で一緒に生活し、一緒に作業をすることは、私たちをよりリラックスさせるのに一役買っていますね。

ーー作品の形やタイトルが女性モチーフなのはなぜですか。

LIV & DOM : 意図的ではなく、そうなっていったんです。私たちは男性のものも作っていたし、最初のお香立てはより男性的な作品でした。しばらくして女性のヌードを使用した作品にとても興味を持ったので、他のものを段階的にやめていって、女性のヌードに絞っていきました。

ーーインスピレーション源は？

LIV & DOM : 決まり文句になりますが、自然、ピカソの陶器、マティスの絵。20世紀初頭にアーティストの集団が住んでいたCharleston farmhouseから下ったところに住んでいるんですが、彼らのスタイルと、家の隅々までを芸術作品にする方法は多くの刺激を与えてくれています。

ーー次に作りたい作品はどんなものですか。

LIV & DOM : 絵画や版画作品のリリースを増やそうとしています。また、大きな作品、特に大きな花瓶についても検討中です。

ーーこれから創作を始めるビギナーに向けて、技術的、精神的なアドバイスをお願いいたします。

LIV & DOM : 根気よく。最初から「ブランド」のすべてを把握する必要があると思わないで大丈夫。だんだん成長し、フィードバックに反応できるようにしていけばいいんです。また、ソーシャルメディアの重要性については過小評価しない方がいいかも。

ーー素材や道具の購入にオススメのメーカー／オンラインショップがあれば教えていただけますでしょうか。

LIV & DOM : セラミックの素材は、イギリスのScarva and Bath Pottersから購入しています。私たちのお気に入りのペイントブラシはRosemary＆Coで、これまでに使用した中で最高のものです。

ーー新型コロナウィルス感染症（COVID-19）でクリエイティヴ面にどのような影響が出ていますか。

LIV & DOM :英国はヨーロッパで最も打撃を受けた国の一つであるため、ロックダウンはしばらく続きそうです。夏と社会活動が味わえないのは悲しいけど、今はすべてを作品づくりと創造を巡る冒険に費やしています。大変に厳しい時ですが、何かを作るには良いですね。

ーーこの側面で新たに気づいたこと、やってみたいアイデアがあれば教えてください。

LIV & DOM : ビジネス面をもっと強化したいです。私たちはまだ若いですが、年をとっていくなかで経済的にしっかりとした柱を作りたいと思っています。

ーー事態が好転し、COVID-19が収束したらしたら何をしたいですか。

LIV & DOM : 個展をやりたい。

ーーCould you tell us what made you want to start your creations?

LIV & DOM : We wanted to convert our love of making into a way of making an income. Creating objects for the home was the obvious way to make our work accessible and saleable. It was that simple really!

ーーWhy did you stick with the materials (Ceramic and Clay)that you use currently for your works?

LIV & DOM : A big part of our work is making something that could just be a sculpture into something useful for the home. We found that ceramics is the easiest way to make this happen.

ーーFrom ideation to when it is released as well as the ceramics, could you take us through the whole creation process, start to finish?

LIV & DOM : Usually an idea will come from us just sitting down and having a talk about potential new work. Then the idea might be drawn out, or made directly in clay. Dom particularly likes to just work straight in the clay, I have a much more full sketchbook. We’ll figure out what glazes and clays to try on some sample pieces, and then choose our favourite to photograph, promote and sell.

Our ceramics process from start to finish works like this; make the object in clay, leave to dry, use a wet sponge to smooth piece, add fine ‘underglaze’ details, first ‘bisque’ firing, apply glaze, glaze firing.

ーーWhat was the most difficult part of it?

LIV & DOM : I think sometimes what's difficult is getting an idea down on paper to show each other clearly what is in each of our heads! Working together means we have to mostly agree on the products we'll make together so sometimes things aren't as harmonious as we'd like.

ーーHow did you acquire the knowledge and the craft that is needed to create the ceramics?

LIV & DOM : We did a course at a ceramics studio (Dom did 12 lessons, I did 6). We got the basics there, and then we worked once a week at Chris Bramble and Freya Bramble-Carters fantastic studio where they fired our work but also gave us a lot of advice and technical support. It was also a lot of figuring things out ourselves and trial and error though!

ーーYou got a degree in illustration. How did you get into 3D works?

LIV & DOM : We were actually doing a lot of 3D work at university. Our illustration course was very open, not just 2D or books or editorial. For our final year we could make our own project, so we chose to start making functional art objects as ‘Liv and Dom’ then.

ーーIs your knowledge and skills of illustration useful to the ceramic works?

LIV & DOM : I think because we do have those illustration skills it means that even the most basic ceramic forms can be transformed into something more exciting so it gives us a lot of creative freedom.

ーーWhat was one of the first things you made? Looking back, what kind of advice would you give yourself?

LIV & DOM : One of our first things as ‘Liv and Dom’ a brand was an incense holder, it was a little man, rather than a woman actually. Our advice to ourselves at 21 would probably be don’t undervalue your work!

ーーHow do you personally express your core/personality/values through your work?

LIV & DOM : I guess one thing could be our relaxed nature. We like to think we’re quite chilled out people and we don’t take life too seriously. We hope this comes across in the way we present and talk about our work, we don’t get overly complicated or sentimental. We like people to make their own minds up about what the work is saying.

ーーCould you take us through the process you underwent to build that core/personality/value ?

LIV & DOM : I think having a fairly relaxed upbringing with just us and our very cool and calm Mum has built this up in us. Not taking personal setbacks too much to heart and powering through. I think having each other to live and work with provides a security that helps us be more relaxed.

ーーThe titles and forms are all related to female. Could you tell us why?

LIV & DOM : This wasn’t actually intentional to begin with. We had work with penises, the first incense holder was a more masculine piece. We just had a lot of interest in the work with the female nudes we were doing so after a while we phased out the other work and just ran with the female nude angle.

ーーWhere do you get your inspiration from?

LIV & DOM : All the clichés! Nature, the ceramics of Picasso, drawings of Matisse. We live down the road from a place called Charleston farmhouse where a group of creatives lived at the beginning of the 20th century. Their style and the way they made every inch of their house a work of art inspires us a lot.

ーーWhat kind of sculpture would you like to create for the next one?

LIV & DOM : We’re actually working on releasing more painting and print work. We also want to explore working on larger pieces, big vases in particular.

ーーTo a person just starting out, what kind of advice would you give them, skills wise and regarding mentality?

LIV & DOM : Be patient, don’t feel like you have to have your ‘brand’ all figured out at the start, let it grow organically and react to feedback. Also don’t underestimate how important social media is.

ーーIf you have any online shops/makers that sell or provide materials and tools that you would recommend, please share them.

LIV & DOM : We get our ceramics supplies from Scarva and Bath Potters in the UK. Our favourite paint brushes are Rosemary & Co, they're the best we've ever used.

ーーHow has the spread of coronavirus effect your lifestyle and creative activities?

LIV & DOM : The UK is basically the worst hit country in Europe now, so the lockdown is looking like it will be here for a while. It’s sad to miss out on the summer and social activities, but it has meant that we are putting our all into our work and creative pursuits. It’s quite intense but has been really good for productivity.

ーーDo you have anything you want to challenge yourself on?

LIV & DOM : Moving the business side forward, we’re still young but we want to make something that is going to really sustain us both financially as we get older.

ーーAfter the coronavirus converges and the situation gets better, what would you like to do?

LIV & DOM : Maybe a solo exhibition at some point!

ーーAny news or something up and coming that you would like to share with us?

LIV & DOM : We have a jewellery collaboration coming up with Wolf and Moon jewellery that we’re very exited about!
