同じく貧富の格差が拡大し続けているアメリカでは、バーニー・サンダース上院議員（バーモント州・無党派）や、昨年史上最年少で当選したアレクサンドリア・オカシオコルテス下院議員（29歳、ニューヨーク州・民主党）を筆頭に、進歩的な政治家が政府に対して格差問題への対処を強く求めている。オカシオコルテスは年収1000万ドル超の富裕層向けの最高限界税率を70％に引き上げるよう提案。最近の世論調査ではアメリカ国民の59％がこの改革を支持すると回答した。
