オーロラは通常、極地周辺でしか見られない。緯度的には、北半球のアラスカやスカンジナビアあたりだ。しかし先週は、太陽活動が活発化した影響を受け、ミシガン州やウィスコンシン州などでもオーロラが観測された。各地でオーロラが大量発生したのは、太陽の表面で大規模な爆発現象「フレア」が起きたのが原因だ。たとえれば、太陽でハリケーンが発生したようなものだ。
