オスカー俳優で環境保護活動家のレオナルド・ディカプリオは8月18日、ブラジルの熱帯雨林アマゾンで燃え広がる火災の消火に役立てるため500万ドルを調達したことを、自身のインスタグラムで発表した。

ディカプリオが立ち上げた自然保護団体「アース・アライアンス」は、アマゾンで消火活動を支援している5つの地元組織にその資金を寄付した。アース・アライアンスは、ビジネス投資家で慈善家でもあるローレン・パウエル・ジョブズ（故スティーブ・ジョブズの妻）ならびに起業家ブライアン・シェスとディカプリオが共同で創設した団体だ。

ディカプリオは8月16日、インスタグラムで次のようにコメントした。「ブラジルの熱帯雨林アマゾンは、原住民100万人と動植物300万種にとってのふるさとだ。そのアマゾンが今、2週間以上にわたって燃え続けている。ブラジルのアマゾンでは、今年に入ってから7万4000件もの火災が発生した。昨年同時期と比較して84％も増えたという驚くべき数字だ」

さらにこう続けた。「アマゾンは、私たちの祈り以上のものを必要としている」
